Communities Living Sustainably Success

The Big Lottery Fund (BIG) has awarded a £10,000 development grant to the partnership led by Sunderland BME Network Ltd. The Partnership includes Sunderland City Council, SES, Age UK Sunderland, EDF Energy, Gentoo, Sunderland University and a range of voluntary and community sector organisations.  It is one of the thirty bids that have been supported nationally.  Only ten will receive funding support of up to £1 million for a programme that will run for up to five years.

What is SBMEN?
• It is a network of 16 black and minority ethnic voluntary and community organisations based in Sunderland with 6 Associate members from the statutory, private and voluntary sectors
• It was set up in 2004 to strengthen BME groups for the benefit of everyone in the city

What we offer?
• Help with business planning, fundraising and project management
• Help with training and supporting management committees

SBMEN
• Is active in the Sunderland Partnership
• Ensures that BME community concerns and issues are recognised by the Partnership
• Identifies funding opportunities for the BME voluntary and community sector in Sunderland
• Promotes partnership working between within and across communities in the city

Achievements

The Sunderland Black and Ethnic Minority Employment Access Project has been recognised as achieving

the Tyne and Wear City Region's Employment & Skills Good Practice Status, exhibiting good practice in Client Engagement & Case Management

Sunderland BME Network Ltd is a member of the Pentagon Partnership Executive. Pentagon Partnership is a strategic consortium for Tyne and Wear’s voluntary community and social enterprise sector.  

Pentagon Partnership merged with the Tyne and Wear Infrastructure Consortium in March 2011 and exists to:

 

  • Increase the sustainability of voluntary community and social enterprise sector  organisations in Tyne and Wear by providing them with access to appropriate expertise on a range of subjects including collaboration, enterprise, legislation, impact measurement and public service delivery
  • Ensure that the sector has a voice at a strategic level, lobbying on behalf of the sector at a subregional decision-making level especially on matters regarding economic regeneration and enterprise
  • Co-ordinate support and development to frontline organisations across Tyne and Wear ensuring that it is of a high standard
